Poster ideas

1.
In this poster, I decided to have the character Hope at the bottom of the poster, with the 3 important objects of the sister appear at the top. In the bottom, it is dark and the character is looking down, once again emphasizing our theme of despair. The objects on the top are in a white background with a type of dreamy bubble effect around them, representing happiness, joy and in particular hope.

If this poster is picked the font and title need to be much larger, yet simple, to focus on the seriousness of the drama, as it deals with despair and death.

2.
This was actually the last idea I came up with. In this poster idea, the sister is holding her own Diary, she is in black and white while the diary is in color. I decided to have her in black and white to represent how she is something from the past, and is no longer alive.

However with the diary in color as this is the thing that brings back hope to Hope, and is something in the present and is still a part of her sister that is living, and helps her, as the story focuses on the diary, having it in color puts a greater emphasize on it, and hits to the audience straight away that the diary plays a major role within the story.

This one out of the 3 is my favourite, as it is simple, and gets the  message across well, without having to show too much.
The font would be bold and sans serif, but for the name hope it would be curvaceous.

We won't be abe to see the sisters face, creating a shroud of mystery amongst the audience, and they will feel more inclined to want to find out who she is.

3.

This idea was originally my first, I have the character hope,  looking more hopeful and gazing out of the window, and below her sister holding the necklace, that hope gave her for her birthday, but we do not see the sisters face, once again, to give a bit of mystery as to who she is, and make the potential audience question what her role i and as she is in the poster plays she definitely plays an important role.

However, having the heart necklace in it could imply straight away that it is more of a romance rather than a drama about two sisters and doesn't imply enough of something upsetting happening within the story, but rather to lovers/ people who were separated and are trying to find their way back to each other, especially when followed by the title, "Bringing Back Hope".

Analysis of film poster

My sister's keeper (2009) is an american drama, based on a novel about a 13 year old girl called Anna who sues her parents for medical emancipation, when she is expected to donate her kidney to her sister kate who is suffering from luekemia.

In the poster above, we have a two shot of both sisters in the forground at the top, smiling hapily, meaning that both sisters are close and enjoy their time together, there is this type of bubble effect around them that could represent something being of a dreamy state or a wish, like a moment that is very magical, especially with the turquoise background that further gives a more calming state.

The bottom half of the poster has the younger sister, at a sicker state blowing bubbles that leads upwards further implying that hr relationship with her sister is but a dream, or a wish.

Music for short film

For our short film as it is a drama and also one that is tragic. We need soft gentle music as well as m,usic that is slightly somber to set in a mood.

I looked at a site called incompetech, that had a wide range of different styles and genres of music that we could use in the film as, silence, expression and in particular the soundtrack is going to be used a lot ot communicate the storyline.

Somber

Wounded

This one sounded really sad, and gave the feeling of despair. It automatically makes you feel depressed and in the creators description they said it would be best suited for a funeral.

Rains will fall

I really liked this song because it twists from sounding hopeful to sad, it represents well our storyline of how the girl continues to go back and forth between moving on or staying in despair at the loss of her sister.
there is also an only piano version: Sovereign

On the pasing of time

This song gave the right mood i wanted but was too slow at places.

Calming/Nostalgic

Windswept

I liked windswept but felt it was a bit too happy.

Prelude in C (BWV 846)

This I really liked because it was a lot more soft in the way it sounded, and didnt sound too happy, but hopeful.

Eternal Hope

This one was absolutely perfect and I definently would like to use this, it was gentle and like the name it sounded hopeful.

Evaluation of presentation and feedback

1. What went well?

What went well was how we managed our roles to our particular strengths, so if someone was best at talking about the narrative, they talked about it. We gave a lot of information and we gave a lot of reasoning behind certain decisions what went really well. No one was too nervous either.

2. What would you change? Improve?

If I had to change something, I would have spoken louder and I would have added information about costuming and more information should have been included on the two sisters personalities and why we picked them, also some background information on their relationship.

3. What have been your individual contributions to the planning and research so far?

I have been responsible for coming up with the storyline and original concept, storyboarding, scripting, animatics, choosing and developing the two characters and the shot list. I also looked at other shorts that inspired our idea.

Audience Reaserch

As we intially at first wanted to follow a narrtive similar to wong fu productions "When Five fell". As in our original storyline, we wanted the story of the girl losing her friend to be told by 4 personal objects that were, important between the girls.

I asked people on facebook, what they thought about the film and the storyline of when five fell. I asked 5 people to watch the film, and they all enjoyed the story, saying that they really like the filming quality and the camerawork. However, 2 out of the 5 said they didnt't understand it at all and until  they were given an explanation by me, that the 5 objects in the film, were telling the girls love story through their eyes, that the film became a whole lot clearer.

Taking this into consideration, as a group we decided that to avoid problems like this with our own film. After some helpful feedback from our teachers, we decided just to tell the story from the diary instead so that it is a lot more easier to follow and work with.

Pre production planning- Storyboarding, Scripting and Animatics

Me and priscilla working on storyboarding
For the first time, I experienced storyboarding in a whole new way. Drawing shot by shot on sticky notes really helped in deciding on certain shots and what to move around and keep in the story.

Here is one of the shotlists that we worked on, it helped to outline the storyboard and the pre storyboard planning was really helpful in deciding what shots would be good visually also.

After finishing the storyboarding for the animatics, helped by Lorna to take photos of them, we then uploaded the pictures onto Final cut to start editing them for our animatics.
Me and priscilla did the voiceovers for the animatics and chose the music that would give a certain vibe to the film.

Summary of reaserch and Analysis of narrative

Analysis of narrative

1.
The story deals with a girl overcoming despair. The story is told through her personal objects of her past up to the point of her depressive state. As the story would be in the point of view of these objects it is limited omniscient. The story follows through Freytag's pyramid.

2. The narrative has changed a lot more, where we have it, that the girl is dressed in black, and is in a room, a conversation can be heard coming from downstairs hinting that someone has died and is preparing to go to a funeral. The girl begins to explore the room, and she opens up the drawer and finds a journal inside. She discovers that it is her sisters journal and beginds to read it.

She skips through the first few pages and begins to read  about her sisters thoughts of the important times they spent together, as she is reading through, the girl seems to become a bit more cheerful again, until she reaches the entry of her sister complaining about the fight they had. This makes her depressed again and out of rage throws down the book, it goes to the final entry and she reads that her sister wanted her not to be angry about what has happened and this gives the girl hope again and gives her a sense of forgiveness from her sister, and she finally leaves the room.

The film will deals with Death, Acceptance, Hope and Forgiveness.
The conflict within the story is of man versus self, as it is only until the girl in the story learnt to forgive herself that she was able to move on from what happened.

The point we also wanted to pull out from the drama was, that after difficulties and hard times, we usually are able to pick ourselves up and move on, and that things usually get better.

Like a french saying: Apres la pluie, le beau temps.
meaning after the rain good weather.

What is a short film?

How to say I love you

This is a short film from a youtube group called Pretend we don't exist productions. The story introduces two characters, a man and woman who meet in the park through awkward circumstances, and end up falling in love.

I really enjoyed the new take on two people falling in love as it was strange and in normal situations, the man would have been straight away labeled as a pervert or some one with ill intentions, but both characters were witty and comical and still had a very sweet feeling to it.
